I've never had an exotic pet (unless you count rabbits as exotic), but I do leave Cheetos on my garden fence posts for the crows. They seem to like that. :)

I’ll count rabbits as exotic. I would leave Cheetos for the crows but they already chase off the other birds so don’t want to encourage them.

UB40's Red Red Wine "was the gateway reggae song for white people who would soon purchase their first and only reggae album..." HAHAHA! SO so so true for this white girl from a very white midwestern suburb. 😂

Wait just a minute now, that's not true! I'm researching enclosures and overhead heating systems but have yet to part with any money. What a bummer that I sold all the reptile equipment (except the thermostats). I never dreamed we'd have a house big enough to accommodate a snake room! Are we not blessed?

I’ve had several pet rats. They’re incredibly smart and sweet and make great pets.

I definitely bonded more with the rats than the snakes. I don't think we will be getting rats again, though. My wife is determined to use frozen rats now.

Interesting thing about rats. I recently interviewed a pet place that rescues reptiles, including snakes. One of the snakes had severe bite marks from a rat that was left in the cage with the snake when the owners went out of town. The snake had recently been fed, wasn't hungry - so to speak - so didn't feed on the rat. It took a year for the snake's skin to heal.

But, on another note, when I saw the rat reference, I was singing Round and Round by Ratt!

Love it! “Round and Round” is a classic, and I saw the music video in my head when I read your comment. Yeah, leaving a rat in a snake enclosure for more than a couple of hours is a bad idea. My wife says she will only do frozen rats for the new snakes. We will see.

Omg I love this so much!! I mean I do not like rats or snakes, but I pretty much did the same thing with fish and then pet birds…hahahaha! I bailed on the fish within a year because I hated the tank maintenance and didn’t do a good job of it. Birds…at one point I had 16! And was doing some breeding. Now, I’m down to a more manageable 3 birds. Next time I feel like having an exotic pet, I’m just not going to go for it or go all in and get crazy. I hope!

I love UB40! I definitely prefer Rat in Mi Kitchen over the overplayed Red, Red, Wine. Labour of Love is one of my favorite albums, and still in my vinyl collection. I LOVE “Many Rivers to Cross,” and “Please Don’t Make Me Cry.” I had Rat in Mi Kitchen on cassette. And listened to it a ton! I also still have a few English Beat vinyl albums in my collection! I also have to go look at track listings sometimes to remember whether a song was UB40 or the English Beat (or General Public or Fine Young Cannibals lol)

Well my wife has bought the enclosures and heating pads so snake adventure part 2 is about to start! At least with birds you don’t have to find mice to feed them. Maybe worms? Or just seed?

Thankfully just seed! And fresh fruits and vegetables.

Oh Steve! Rats and snakes are two of my absolute worse fears! Rats pop out every once in a while in certain parts of Chicago at night (which is partially why we live in the suburbs!) I also don't like mice, which have occasionally made their way into our house. (If someone filmed me jumping onto a chair at those moments I'm sure I'd get more followers than I currently have on Substack!) I love hiking in Palm Springs but as soon as I see a sign about snakes or hear of someone being confronted by one, I try to avoid those hikes! So, I may not be stopping by your house any time soon....!

Luckily, our house is big enough now that you could visit our house and be none the wiser that there’s a snake room! Except now you know, so we will have to perform severance on you so that part of your brain is turned off when you arrive!🧠
