'Five More Minutes' by Rust is the kickoff track from their album Bar Chord Ritual. This is a great post-grunge record filled with rockers.

GREAT list. "Take Five" is so iconic! I can't think of a single Rush song that has "five" in the title, or even the lyrics sheet. Unless we're counting the rock operas with multiple movements, as designated by Roman numerals in the liner notes. If so, then I'll go with "V. Monsters!" from "La Villa Strangiato"

Way to tie it back to B.B. King and my previous post! Perfect addition to the bonus numbers playlist. Thanks Andres!

Finally getting around to this post! There are quite a few songs here that I don’t know. I love the rocking start with Five To One, it’s a fantastic track!

I’m not familiar with the Bowie track although that doesn’t surprise me as he’s an artist on which I’m woefully underweight in knowledge. I really need to dig more into his catalog.

I haven’t listened to Laid in forever! Forgot how much I loved that album way back when. I listened to Yummy and it was a little meh for me. I should go back to it as I probably didn’t give it enough time.

Not sure I ever actually listened to any Housemartins but oddly enough I had a poster on my wall as a kid. How weird!

You can bring the mood down anytime you want of it involves Mazzy Star! But hold on!! Five String Serenade was a cover?!? Mind absolutely blown!!

I love the duo of jazz songs you wrapped up with. They had to be on the list and were worth waiting for.

In terms of Five songs I would’ve included:

Five Minutes of Funk by Whodini from their 1983 debut Escapes. The entire album, which included Friends and The Freaks Come Out at Night, was incredible.

Hi-Five from Angel Olsen’s from 2014’s Burn Your Fire For No Witness. Although she’s been hit and miss for me, this was the album that put her on my radar.

Five Fathoms, the opener from EBTG’s Temperamental, while it doesn’t live up to Hatfield 1980 or the title track, was still a fantastic opener to their 1999 album that was kinda overlooked in my opinion.

Last but not least, I’d be remiss if I didn’t include Massive Attack’s Five Man Army from their legendary debut album, 1991’s Blue Lines.

Wow, thanks for the thorough feedback, Mark! And the great suggestions. I almost included the Angel Olsen track as I do love Burn Your Fire For No Witness. But it got cut when I went from 25 to 15. I am surprised that Spotify didn't suggest Massive Attack or EBTG in my search. In my iTunes, I have different EBTG and MA albums, so it didn't appear there. And Whodini! Great choice! I used to love them! I think I do have an album of theirs but my albums are not all digitized, so can't search them for this project.

You might be the only person over 50 who isn't aware of the more well-known Bowie hits. There's even a documentary about him called Five Years. I laughed when you said you had a Housemartins poster but hadn't actually listened to them! Paul Heaton, who sings most of the leads, is still playing and sounding great. He made 9 albums with The Beautiful South and most of them are good to great. He and Jacqui Abbott (who was part of TBS too) record together now and they do a lot of the old material live.

If you're going to be living in England, that might be required musical history for you!:)

I loved that Whodini album which is why that was the first song that cane to mind. I listened to it again last night for the first time in decades and it’s still great.

I had the Changesbowie Greatest Hits compilation and that was pretty much all of my exposure to his music when I was younger. I’ve dipped in and out of some of his work on the streaming platforms but haven’t made a concerted effort. He’s one of those artists life Prince and Stevie Wonder that I want to delve into more deeply in retirement. I did love the Blackstar album but he’s still mostly a musical blind spot for me.

Funnily enough, the only thing I really knew about The Housemartins is that Norman Cook went on to become Fatboy Slim. I used to get these music magazines when I was a kid and one of them had this long skinny poster of the band in a phone booth which found a perfect spot on my bedroom wall.

What ? No "9 to 5" by Dolly Parton ? 😁 Although I can't complain, as my favorite "5" song (Mano Negra) made it into the list.

I'm so glad you commented on the Mano Negra song, I was hoping someone knew of it. They were such a fun band! I would have included 9 to 5, but I'm using only songs with the word "Five" not the number for the main list. The bonus list will include some number tunes. Feel free to suggest any others!

I guess this is ineligible, but I think it makes the special subversive rule breaker list:

And by MIter logic- it makes all of the 1-5 lists!!

I don't know a lot of these Steve! Nice deep dive! How about a couple that seem maybe too obvious?

9 to 5 - Dolly Parton

867-5309 - Tommy Tutone

Yes, both are number tunes and I'm only choosing word tunes to keep my options more limited. The Dolly Parton will for sure make the bonus playlist! I likely will add Tommy Tutone, but not sure which number to use!:)

An additional one that came to mind for me is "Five Miles Out" by Mike Oldfield. Man, I love that song!

As always a good list. I only know the hits (and know "Five Guys Named Moe" from the Joe Jackson version.

A few more:

Aretha Franklin "Mr. Dj. (5 for the DJ)" -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUF-njIVpmQ

It isn't one of her most famous songs but it is fun and happy!

Rihanna (et al) "FourFive Seconds" -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kt0g4dWxEBo

(I was reminded of this recently, by a Chris Dalla Riva post about how many celebrity colabs aren't very interesting, and I think it's an exception).

Wow - great picks! I hadn't heard either of them before -- not sure how I hadn't heard the Aretha one before, as I have I think 7 or 8 of her albums. Though only the Rihanna meets my no number songs criteria. Though I'll make an exception for this great Aretha tune.

I still play Joe Jackson's Jumpin Jive on the regular, as it's such a great tribute. He captures the sound so well. Then again I'm such a JJ fanboy that I'll praise everything he does, even Night Music.

I'm glad you liked them! (and you did stretch the rule for "Mambo No. 5" -- understandably so).

I should pull out Joe Jackson more often -- he's one of my favorite songwriters. _Jumpin Jive_ is a great album.

Ha- that’s right! I don’t know how I overlooked that rule break! I think I really wanted to include both versions of the song.
