Hard to believe that this received radio play but it did. Head scratcher. When I was a kid this would come on all the time. I remember liking it. It was unique and dare I say, happy! But then again, Bloodrock's D.O.A. got airplay as well. I was one confused little tot.
I just played D.O.A. and can't believe I never heard it before. I also can't believe it made the top 40! (If I'm to believe the comments on the YouTube video.) I feel like a deep dive into Bloodrock might be in the cards for 2023! Thanks for the tip!
KFJZ the local (Ft Worth) AM pop station would play it at night and it would scare me to sleep. They were produced by Grand Funk Railroad's Terry Knight.
Never thought of scaring myself to sleep as an antidote to insomnia -- I'll have to try it sometime! I did notice that Bloodrock reunited not too long ago, based on the video clips on YT. They sounded a whole lot better than most bands of that time that get back together.
I thought you could tag her with @. Maybe we need to know the exact wording of the name we are trying to tag? I also have struggled to figure out how to use the tags. I’ll try tagging you in my next newsletter!:) And I’m finally down to hearing the “Popcorn” melody in my head only 20 times a day instead of 100.
Amazing treatise, Steve, and like so many of your fab pieces, completely out of nowhere (which I always love pronouncing now-here...hey, same letters! Hard to believe I once taught, huh?). A song I was never sure what was what....from back in the day, the jock would always seem to say, "Here's Popcorn....Hot Butter!" or "That was Hot Butter....Popcorn!", neither of which designates song or artist!
And, as Popcorn never distinguished themselves (after that song) as a sustainable group (what? Oh, I mean, Hot Butter....don't I?), it became a moot point.
So, you can imagine the problems I had when the DJ said, "That was Black Sabbath with Black Sabbath" or "Bad Company.....Bad Company!" Aw, c'mon, man, help a brother out! Which one's the song title?
I liked the B&W dance video...they looked like penguins in an earthquake! And, the girl playing the odd instrument I'd never seen before, either. That was cool. I couldn't tell where she was from, though, until the end of the video....once she stopped playing, it hit me: Ah, she's Finnish. "Encore!" And, to you, my bruh!👏😁👍
I'm not going to say it's "good," or even "good for you" but it burns and scalds. Just like actual hot butter.
The B&W dance video is insane and if I put that one first I would have added a warning that unnecessary and frequent zoom shots into boobs might cause seizures. Not to mention the choreography that is probably illegal in the southern states, of which you reside in one of.
I did mention the girl's Finnishness in my description of the video, but my question to you is -- how would you know when she's done performing? I think you know the answer to that.
You bet! I thought I’d have you find it as a surprise instead of letting you know ahead of time (which might of been only a matter of minutes). My goal for 2023 is to promote other writers here whenever it feels right.
I’m not generally a fan of surprises but this level of surprise was perfect! Thank you. I endeavor to do the same as far as plugging and promoting great talent who are also likeminded kind and caring individuals
I am down for talking about TV at any point even if you come to the post 5 months later based on your viewing schedule. Just know it may take me a minute to two to oil my brain cogs (if that’s a thing) I am always up for going down nerd holes! And btw popcorn was my dinner dessert yesterday. Main meal was Cheerios. It was an off day. Popcorn is amazing and its own food group really

LOL to this whole thing. I’ve never heard it until now! Thanks for the earworm education.
And I love Beth’s TV newsletter, too!! (I thought I could tag her with @ but apparently no?)

I just meant here in the comments, trying to tag @beth but it doesn’t work (i’m on my phone).
Yeah - that’s not possible in the comments, unfortunately. I think there was a thread in the Office Hours about people wanting that added in.
Really enjoyed the Charlie Parra version. Awesome write up!
Thanks for reading, Paul!

WTF is with the ass-slapping in the Gingerbread version, and is that Baby Colin Robinson in black?
It is Tween Colin Robinson. And the ass-slapping is my move. They are lucky they filmed it 50 years ago or I’d be contacting my lawyers!
And thank you for the shout out here!!!
