Great article! I looooove the movie "Flirting With Disaster!" It is sooo well written, like a nice tight Seinfeld episode, everything weaves together perfectly and hilariously. It's too good. For some reason, thinking about the road trip aspect of "Flirting With Disaster" is making me want to rewatch "Roadside Prophets" again. Such an undervalued film with superb cameos. And what better leading men could a music lover ask for than John Doe and Adam Horowitz? I feel a double feature coming on!
Great article! I wasn't aware of the popularity of the "Reaction" videos on YouTube, I had to view the one with the Molly Hatchet song (which I wasn't aware of either, even though that was a time when I listened a lot to radio, but probably not the stations that song played on), funny to see the "reactors" bopping and swaying their heads. Also watched Alex and Andy's "25 or 6 to 4" video, that was pretty entertaining, ha! Speaking of "Flirting with Disaster", the movie, that was also one of my favorite, funniest movies in the mid-90's. So many funny moments in that, the scene when Ben Stiller's character goes to the house where the two, tall volleyball sisters live, haha. I'm glad you were able to find yourself in these videos, after those longer work days. Working at home all the time now, I feel I need to peel away from my work area from time to time, or force myself to do that. Now I have another reason, watching "Reaction" videos, and at the same time, maybe finding music I haven't heard of yet! ;)
Very engrossing, Steve! I must admit, I'm altogether unfamiliar with both "Flirting with Disaster"s. The Molly Hatchet song and album, I've been well aware of since I was selling the album in '79 at my Houston record store...just never heard it. Pretty impressed by the musicianship. The film of the same name looks like a definite "must-watch."
The actors' interplay was fun to watch, and the writing is superb...plus, to watch comedic pros like Tomlin and Alda interact with Stiller (whom we know is a fan, as well!) is equally fascinating.
As for new, clear reactors, I'm really only familiar with Andy & Alex, although I appreciate, now, the informed expertise of Doug and Elizabeth, and may check them out further. Thanks for the spotlight on new stuff (for me, anyway)!
I’m kinda shocked you don’t know Molly Hatchet’s “Flirtin’ with Disaster”! Yeah, the musicianship in that band was stellar. Apparently the drummer was really into Neil Peart (from Rush) and other more intricate percussionists. He gives their otherwise straightforward southern rock jams some added flavor.
And yes, do check out the movie version. It’s a genuine classic comedy IMO.
I’m impressed that you do know Andy & Alex; they are a recent discovery for me. I also like that they sit with a whiskey bar between them. Total college student move.
Back in my late-'70s record store days, when the Molly album dropped, I was using my newly-refined pop snobbery to weed thru "the unnecessary." With their cover art, and countless rock mag reviews that I'd read, and CBS Records' PR "warnings," I was well aware of how their music was described.
So, with free access to literally dozens of new release albums (and singles) pouring in each week, I had to discern a way to put some aside. Poor form, granted, from a purely musical aspect, but an economically time-sensitive way to become focused on a new record I had at least a passing chance of possibly liking! And, clearly, for me at the time, Molly had no chance to win any effective turntable time at the Kyle compound.

Yeah, I’ve been toying with the idea of writing a piece about road trip movies. There are so many great ones. Thanks for reading.
