Despite somehow owning a Fishbone t-shirt (no idea how I acquired it) and wearing it proudly (I just really liked the t-shirt), I’m not sure I’ve ever heard their music. Listening to “Party at Ground Zero” now and enjoying it. I’ll have to dig into their catalog a little bit.
Thanks for the shoutout as well Steve, I appreciate it! Looking forward to these numeric playlists, they’re gonna be a lot of fun!!
I have a huge soft spot to their 2nd album, Truth and Soul, but the third, The Reality of My Surroundings, is also excellent. After that it's all pretty hit and miss. But seeing them live is really the ultimate experience. I'm thinking of ordering a t-shirt from them now!:)
I'll mention here (it's also a response to a comment below) a live show I attended on the Truth and Soul tour.
I saw them in December 1988 at the Santa Monica Civic, and Public Enemy opened for them, with Stetsasonic and Living Colour before them. It was a friggin' insane show. During P.E.'s set, fights started breaking out and they only got to play a few songs before leaving the stage. We thought it was over, but the gangbangers left in the break and when Fishbone came on they were able to flip the energy, and Angelo Moore even did his patented "jump into the audience and get carried through the crowd on their hands" thing, which was the ballsiest thing I'd ever seen.
Looking up the exact date, I found a post on Chuck D's Facebook page all about that night:
Thanks for the shout & kind words! "Party At Ground Zero" is fantastic, but I'd also submit that "Sunless Saturday," "So Many Millions," and "One Day" could all make a run at the title.
I finally (finally!) got to see them a few years ago, and even with a midday time slot and a good dose of Midwest humidity, they still put on an incredible show.
Yeah, read the comment I left on Dusty Wright's comment. I was going to tell the story in the main body, but thought it was long enough. They might be the best live band I've ever seen. I have watched YouTube videos of recent shows and they still have explosive energy. Angelo Moore is like Iggy Pop in terms of insane shirtless stunts on stage (and into the audience).
All good picks from you, and I love "Freddie's Dead," "Ghetto Soundwave" and so many others.
Thanks for sharing, Steve. I was living in LA in '85 and would catch Fishbone all over town. One crazy night at the very cozy Al's Bar in Downtown LA, they tore the place up. I believe Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper opened for them. And, Elvis Costello's "Less Than Zero" is one of other favorite "zero" songs.
Yes! For sure in the top 5 live acts I've ever seen, if not #1. I saw them at least once that year (it could have been Al's Bar, but I don't think so -- I did see Minutemen there though, which blew my mind).

That was a couple years prior - it was Dead Milkmen, Meat Puppets and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Another indelible show featuring bands that all got much bigger.
At the Fishbone/P.E. show I was way in the back in the bleachers - the energy was way too intense for a 21 year old suburban white boy.
Hmmmm......what's the deal with you and "food groups"? Milk, Meat, Peppers, Fish.......oh, and Puppets. Cancel your next appointment.....I think I've got you figgered out!!!😁
Just in case we haven't wandered far enough off into the weeds, I was spinning The Meat Puppets' 'Juevos' yesterday. I'd forgotten how much I liked it.
Fishbone’s debut EP is a banger from beginning to end!
Hope to see Carry the Zero on that final list.
Oh, you will....That is one of my all-time favorite songs from one of my all-time favorite albums. I still get chills when I listen to it.

So, so many good tracks. May we all have even half of Moore's ebergy at his age.

I might be way off here, but is/was that the show where you wound up sitting on top of one of the speakers?

Lol. Makes sense.
