So I found Goose this year, and more specifically, a live show on Bandcamp I really liked. I told a fellow writer about it, and they very quickly replied that Goose posts almost ALL of their shows. It was quite a fun rabbit hole to fall down.
Definitely the jam band thing to do. The genre perfected growing a cult following. Have you heard Spafford yet? Small following but really good-- I once saw a 2-hr show where they played 2 songs, one each set. New on my radar that donβt fit the jam band mood but stem from it: Katrina Rykman (Dave Dreiwitzβs prodigy) and Neil Francis. There are 2 Neilβs of the same name, this one is from Chicago.

Wow, so much new music and so little time! And thank you for reminding me Iggy's still with us. I would add Billy Idol to the list of people who announced this year that they are not going anywhere!
Aint that the truth! Iggy will always be with us, even after his body finally turns to dust. Billy Idol has been touring for the past few years. I know he had to cancel a show in SF last year (or the year before?) I heard a live show and his voice is still strong. I need to catch up on the Zapatos! So many Substacks, so little time!
Your intro made me snort into my Irish Breakfast so thanks for that. It was so fun to collaborate with men of taste and wit. Noname was not on my radar before this and I am into her swagger! Thanks for adding so many amazing artists to my future playlists!
By Irish breakfast do you mean fried potatoes and whiskey?
And definitely a blast to collaborate. I discovered Noname when her first album was reviewed on the music radio show/podcast Sound Opinions. Was blown away. All 3 albums are killer.

Irish breakfast? For me, that's always been Lucky Charms (what do you call a magical Irish sprite in green who's losing fingers? A Leperchaun) and O'Cheerios. They're tragically malicious! I'll just let myself out.
Her first two albums are phenomenal. I was supposed to see her last week but she came out on stage and cancelled the show :( Was really looking forward to it.
What? Really? That's lame. What was the reason? Did she lose her voice? I want to say that Hayley Williams of Paramore had to postpone a few shows after losing her voice earlier this year.
Yeah, she was originally supposed to play in Toronto in October, but it was postponed to last week for whatever reason. So we're at this new venue, listen to the opener (she was actually pretty dope), and then Noname comes out on stage and says she's too sick to perform. Her voice did sound pretty ragged though. I got my full refund in 2 days, so I'm not mad about it. But it looked like she was going to have a backing band, which would've been a killer show. I think this show was just cursed haha
Totally digging the recommendations! Bully and Geese are now in rotation.
Ironically or coincidentally, geese can be horrible bullies!
Yes!
There was a good three months where I couldnβt stop listening Geese
Not to be confused with Goose, which is a band Iβve seen many times. Check them out if you havenβt already.

All of these are new names for me!
Oh, and itβs Neal Francis. Spelled correctly. Album: Sentimental Garbage.
Isnβt this fun? π€© ππ
Fun!
Here's my 10-6:
10. S. Carey & John Ramond - Shadowlands
9. Villages - Dark Island
8. Andy Shauf - Norm
7. Nico Paulo - Nico Paulo
6. Troye Sivan - Something to Give Each Other
Nice! Troye Sivanβs record is a joy.

Listening to the Chemical Brothers track as I read all this (at 8am) and thinking I need to add a soundtrack for my readers to listen to as they read!
You totally should embed a track into your posts. I think it adds a little something.
Or better yet, commission one of the many great composers here on Substack to write original music for your posts!
Good to see Durand Jones still active. His song "Morning In America" is both glorious and sad.
He's active and currently on tour. Just saw him a couple weeks ago. Great show!
Another great artist Jeffrey Harvey turned us onto!
My entire honorable mentions list is just ukulele and flute tracks.
I'm hoping for an Andre 3000/Lizzo collaboration of only instrumental flute music. Maybe they can play flute versions of hip hop classics!
Kevin 3000 over here
I came VERY close to adding Andre 3000's album to our list for the sole purpose of being glad he's still making music at all.
My honorable mention is gonna be another 10 albums at this point. This year was ridiculous.
It totally was-- in all the best ways!
That's what the honorable mentions are for. But I think it deserves an entire STSYL post.

My Irish-American family has led me to believe whiskey, fried potatoes, and corned beef sandwich was the move.

How... how do you get tickets to all of these shows?!

ππ Hopefully she comes back. Her live band is a big part of her sound.
Maybe in my 20's, lol. Now I'm an aging hipster with aging hips so it's tea all the way.
Tell me about it. I am sure I'll be writing about my hip and lower back pain in a future Earworm story. Putting on socks is like walking a tightrope!
I'm pretty sure I'm keeping BioFreeze in business at this point.
