I have huge sentiment to these mj-infused sounds of Cypress Hill. Songs like these, "I Juswanna Chill" by Large Professor, "Hip 2 Tha Game" by Lord Finesse or Redman's "Smoke Buddah" bring so many teenage, silly memories
A truly brilliant album, Black Sunday soundtracked some seriously messed-up grad school escapades I'd like to think I'm still reeling from ... but that'd be ridiculous. Like some sort of flashback. Nevertheless ... My favourite Cypress Hill track is actually from CH IV, 'High Times': 'The very first time I hit the weed I was young/Coughing up a lung/High strung/Back in '81/Going to school/Hitting the Buddha behind the bleachers/Going to class high/Selling the lye to the teachers'. Genius. Happy 4.20 to you and yours!
So Buddha is bud, I take it? I like to think they were Buddhist stoners... No one ever talks about grad-school escapades. It's either HS or undergrad, so you were a next level partier! Happy 4.20 my friend!
Yes, Buddha is bud (and Cypress Hill are the only ones I've ever heard it referred to as such), but I I like to think it's really, really good. Like Thai stick level. And yes, I have my HS and undergrad stories, but grad school provided a whole different level of ... complicated escapades. All soundtracked, of course by the finest early-90s alternative/indie tracks!
By the time I'd reached my 22nd birthday I had already smoked most of Mexico. Various strains and types of vasculars ... "Thai Stick," etc. But my favorite 420 brand name was a particularly devastating bud called "Montanooshka Thunderfuck." I don't remember much else about it. ;--)
Anyway, the 420 track that first came to mind was The Fraternity of Man's "Don't Bogart That Joint" ... from the Easy Rider soundtrack.
I forgot that song was by The Fraternity of Man. Yes, a classic. It was played quite often at college at UC Santa Cruz, though my band never played it. And "thai stick" was one of the best brands of pot I ever smoked back in the day. Also, it's what Chong smokes in Up in Smoke, though he calls it Tied Stick.
I love this song. I also love the sampled loop of Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man." Wu-Tang also used it in "Preacher's Daughter." Such a great 4/20 song, maybe the best one.
They incorporated samples so well on their albums, mostly not in obvious ways. I need to play "Preacher's Daughter" and see if I remember it. My Wu-Tang knowledge is fairly lacking for someone who claims to be a '90s hip-hop guy. I'll blame it on my memory.
The poster children of the 4/20 movement. Great choice for the holiday. I celebrated accordingly ☺️😎
One of my favorite songs is Cypress Hill/Sonic Youth “I Love You Mary Jane” from the Judgement Night soundtrack.

I know the Redman song but not the others - I'll be checking them out later today. Thanks!

My favorite is pretty recent. It's from the Norwegian group Kakkmaddafakka. Pretty fun! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pq-tjxNJc4
Cool tune! Never heard of them. Love the band name! Thanks for sharing.
