I know you’ve all had earworms stuck in your heads this week….time to fess up! Release them here and their grip will loosen.
Was it ”The Macarena”? Was it “Gangnam Style”? Don’t feel ashamed. We’ve all been there.
To start it off, here’s a couple iconic lyrics from a classic rock song from the early 80s that I haven’t been able to quit looping.
You see it all around you Good lovin' gone bad And usually it's too late when you, realize what you had
Those are the first lines to 38 Special’s “Hold On Loosely” from their 1981 album Wild Eyed Southern Boys. I’ve always had a soft spot for this song. It’s a pop song wrapped in a southern rock candy shell. And it has a great message about relationships in the chorus:
Just hold on loosely, but don't let go If you cling too tightly You're gonna lose control
So, this week I've been pulling together a playlist of all the songs referenced in the latest chapter of my music themed novel https://challenge69.substack.com ...
... and ever since I've had The Adverts' 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes' on subconscious repeat, particularly the classic closing couplet, "Gary don't need his eyes to see, Gary and his eyes have parted company."
There are many more classics like this in the book (and it's free to subscribe), give it a try today.
I've had "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins stuck in my head for weeks so I rewatch the original Footloose movie on Sunday. Definitely recommend rewatching at least the epic warehouse dance scene :P
That scene is a masterclass in warehouse cinematography and choreography. I just rewatched it again and, wow. We are seriously underutilizing our warehouses in this country. I loved the shot of Kevin flying through the air that gets repeated 8 times. Perfection. And almost 40 years later, Kevin Bacon has still got it.
I've been working on a playlist for my death-themed party next month and now have "Oh Death" by Rising Appalachia stuck in my head. "Oh death. Oh death. Won't you spare me over 'till another year" has been on repeat in my head for the past 2 days. There are other variations of this classic tune, but I like RA's version the best.😋☠️🎶
Yeah, I actually heard Camper Van Beethoven's version before I ever heard any others, so have a soft spot for that one, but it's amazing how different artists interpret this song. Which according to Wikipedia, goes back to 1908 or even possibly to 1870 (depending on how loose an interpretation one is willing to accept). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O_Death
Giggles first (you know they're coming), Steve!: Hey, I loved that '50s sitcom, "I Love Loosely"! So, of course, I've always dug .38 Special's "Hold on Lucy"! Sorry....I was dropped on my head....repeatedly.
Great spotlight on the little speed bump for "country-rock" leaning bands...coming up with something the label can successfully push to radio....hence a dash of candy-pop sprinkling. So much so, that Wiki actually has "power pop" (no, Wiki....just no) as among three possible genre leanings for this song (along with southern rock and hard rock).
The song has an interesting writing history that includes one Jim Peterik (about whom I've written at least once). Jim wrote and sang the 1970 hit "Vehicle" for/with The Ides of March, plus he was in Survivor in the '80s ("Eye of the Tiger"). "Hold On Loosely" got to #27 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Plus, I'd never seen .38 Special "live," so the video was fun to see them move around! And, now, I'll happily be "worming" Lucy loosely in my brain all day!!🎵🎼🎸🎤🎧😁👍
But what earworm are you plagued with, Brad? The "hold on Lucy" you joke about is actually related to a post I wrote a few months back on earworms where we change the lyrics to songs in our head. Usually for comedic effect. I walked a dog today named Lucy and I kept singing to her "Hold on Lucy, ok let's go" though I did that before reading your comment so don't try and take credit for it!:)
Oh, that's funny! I've got to check out your previous post....to someone (me) for whom lyrics were nothing more, really, than "just another part of the song," and not some profound message or world-saving pronouncement, I've forever been creating mondegreens in countless songs, not to mention inserting spoonerisms reft and light! Holidays are coming....one of my faves, as it mixes secular and religious elements: "The little Lord Jesus, a heap on the sleigh." Bingle Jells!💥
