I've been slowly making my way through this list, but whoa, Voice of Baceprot and The Warning are fantastic! Thanks for introducing me to them.

Yeah, both all-female rocking trios are awesome! I have a plan to write a post about VOB in the next couple of months. I saw them live and filmed a couple of songs, which I've never posted or shared, so that should be rectified. Thanks for reading!

After returning from an amazing six days of hiking in Jordan I’m currently lying in bed with Covid, which isn’t quite the way I’d hoped to start 2024. But it is giving me a chance to work my way through a major Substack backlog.

I love this idea of posting 75 songs instead of albums. About half of these artists are brand new to me so I’m looking forward to digging in more deeply to these songs and albums. I didn’t know that Paramore had released a collaboration album of This Is Why! That Wet Leg collaboration is absolute gold!

While I haven’t listened to every track in its entirety yet, I’ve sampled the entire list and everything appeals to me. Saving this playlist on my Spotify for further evaluation.

Standouts for me so far are the Softcult, The Warning and The Hives tracks. It was so good to see some excellent releases from stalwarts of my 90s listening like Kirsten Hersh and Louise Post (along with Natalie Merchant and Cowboy Junkies, both of whom made my AOTY list).

Looking forward to digging into the next 50 tracks later this week!

That sucks that you got Covid after such a fantastic sounding trip. At least your ears aren't affected (I think?), which is sounds like you are taking advantage of.

The Paramore re: This is Why project was such a great idea and the generosity and genuine love from the collaborators is sonically apparent. I almost put the Louise Post album in my top 10, but it's not end-to-end bangers so it fell to around 20 or so. It's so good though, and gives me a giddy high more than several in my top 10. I have to listen to the Natalie Merchant and CJ albums; I haven't heard either one! In fact, I didn't even know Natalie had a new album last year! It makes me wonder if she fell through my cracks or never got promoted properly.

Excited to hear what else stood out for you in the other two parts! And BTW I do plan to get to your top 15 soon. Life has a way of filling up to bursting...

Kristin Hersh never misses. Any other year, and "Sleepwalker" would've been a top 20-if not top 10- record for me.

Agreed. I think it's also a slow-burn album, requiring more time than I had to give to it. A quality a bunch of other albums in 2023 have; maybe they will the the proper attention over the next couple years.

Good stuff, looking forward to the rest! Here's my list 2023 list so far, these aren't due for another five years as far as I'm concerned: https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_W0GuOgdVtXwF1oVGN6Rog91VJl_xTkP&si=DHuSjZ36xKnvRzUp

Very cool list! Lots of ones I also love and I was going to put a Sparklehorse song in this list (in the artists that began in the 90s section), but took it out for flow.

I did notice in your list the “secret song inside,” I think it was track 29?🤓

I think it was magnanimous of me to only include one Miter song. (but it's more of a Jill song).

I forgot to mention that I intentionally did not include any of my top ten album artists in these 75 songs. That way I could cover more awesome bands.

Lists like these make my day. I listen to so much music as I work on the playlist for my next issue, I often find myself reverting to the tried and tested. I will definitely be working my way through this and the next lists. And there's no question re Gaz Coombes - he's naturally gifted, while Albarn is mostly booksmart. And the Gallaghers ... well, they're really only Beatles' rip-offs filtered through a pop-rock vein. Wonderwall's a good song, but otherwise. Meh.

I’m with you on the Oasis part. I do love me most of the Blur catalog though and several of Albarn’s projects. He does seem like a good guy in the several interviews I’ve seen with him.

Fantastic, Steve. It's gonna take a while to get through this list. Thanks for compiling.
