All great choices - but Pink Floyd’s ‘Breathe’ is the only one makes you confront your very existence. It’s haunting, and that’s why it’s - hands down - my first choice.
Thanks, Bryan! I think others have agreed with you. I would say Alexi Murdoch's does something similar, but a bit gentler. But there's no denying the brilliance of everything about DSOTM, especially the song that (sort of) starts it off.
Brad is my next guest, so you can assume The Cure streak ends here....:) Thanks for reading, Kristin! There will be some new to you's next time I would bet.
Totally forgot that Anna Nalick and her "Breathe" exist! Kind of a lost classic, if you ask me. I knew the Vanessa Carlton comparison was coming before I even saw it.
Also, Mark, yep, dancing a lot will do that to the knees. I went to dance clubs in Berlin two nights in a row in 2023 and had to duck out early the second night because my knees were screaming at me. No fair!!!!
I'm so late to replying back to folks....busy week. I'm amazed that you know Anna Nalick! You contain multitudes! You're not allowed to have knee issues yet. You both must do a lot of squatting and kicking in your dancing.🕺
This was another excellent STUDS! "Breathe (In The Air)" is a classic pick from DSOTM. When I saw The Shins in 2007, they covered this track, and to my surprise, it sounded just as ethereal and rich. The Prodigy elicits such 90s nostalgia! The singles from The Fat of the Land were inescapable. Thanks for sharing, Mark! —Matt
Matt! I just saw that my reply to you went to the general comments...what I said was: "Matt, what, were you 7 when Fat of the Land came out?😀 You must have been a true Prodigy! Maybe I see a Phosphene cover song in your future?"
Have you and Rachel played any shows to support Veleteen?
Oh snap, I didn't see that until now! Hah, I was 10 years old at the time when MTV first hooked me; I loved "Closer" but it also gave me a few nightmares. As for Velveteen, Rachel's got an acoustic solo performance this Friday in Milwaukie, OR for their annual Porchfest. And it's free!
So I guess you guys decided against using the biggest hit: "Breathe" by Faith Hill! I wouldn't have voted for it but just sayin'... Of those you have listed the Cure, Pink Floyd and Alexi Murdoch are a bit too languid for my taste. Of course, I think that's the point of breathing! Still it's between The Prodigy and Anna Nalick. My vote goes to The Prodigy for its original approach to the concept of breathing!
I had Faith Hill in a longer playlist that i didn’t share with Mark, as he had his picks chosen already. There are several others, but I did lobby for Alexi Murdoch, which is what led to six songs. Thanks for pointing that out, Dan!
Actually, somehow I totally forgot this song and it didn’t pop up in my searching, which is really weird given how successful it was. Languid is certainly a good description of those three songs.
I googled "Breathe" songs too and it didn't come up! But I KNEW the song existed so I had check out her catalog and it is on her Greatest Hits so I'm not sure why it isn't searchable. Maybe she pissed someone off at Google!
My karate sensei gave me that book! It was quite interesting in terms of the research, but not as helpful as he probably hoped it would be for my chronic breathing issues.
Oh, right: the music: I was very ready to like a new Breathe song well enough to vote for it over my predictable choice. Alas, it didn't turn out that way.
I guess that means Pink Floyd? I hardly followed all the advice in Breath, but I did tape my mouth shut when sleeping for a little bit to see how much I was of a night-time mouth breather. And I know that the 4-7-8 breath suits me well.
Yeah, if Floyd's on the list, I won't give anyone else will get a fair chance. I will be checking out Nalick though. Thanks for the intro to her.
Great episode, guys! I'm pretty sure I know which song is going to win, but I voted for a different one anyway. 😁
Thanks, Pe! Yes, Pink Floyd has a commanding lead so far. Let me know if you’d like to be a guest for STUDS. I’d love to bring you on board!
I’d be honored, Steve. Send me a DM and let’s talk.

This was so fantastic!! Other than The Cure and Pink Floyd, the rest was new to me!
I love that you had back to back Cure STUDS.
Brad is my next guest, so you can assume The Cure streak ends here....:) Thanks for reading, Kristin! There will be some new to you's next time I would bet.
What? No Faith Hill? 🤣 You know me, had to go with Pink Floyd. Great STUDS episode. It's clear you both had fun with this one.

Don’t say i didn’t warn you about my dancefloor kicks!!
You got moves like Jagger!

I have friends in Portland so send me the deets!
Thanks so much for having me Steve, I really enjoyed this!!
What a blast, thanks for coming along for the ride!

It’s quite bizarre isn’t it?!?

Was leaning Cure, but Prodigy won me over. Nice one, you two! 🤘🏻
😩 Ken!! No! I was sure I could count on you for a Cure vote. Prodigy is a good pick tho 😆
I contain multitudes, Mark! 😉
You are a voting prodigy, Ken.

As much as i love The Cure, Nalick got my vote.
If you're being honest, so am I: same here. Don't come for me Cureheads!!
I know we both repped for our own favorites in our STUDS installments. Eleven votes in and it’s not looking good for The Cure 😞
Well, there ain’t no cure for the summertime blues. It is early though, Robert Smith et al, still have plenty of time to gain a few votes.
Nalick’s is a lovely song.
