Great episode! I love both of your generous interpretations of the word "superstar". Why not? You're right. We should acknowledge and celebrate those silent heroes who make our lives better.

I'm going with Lauryn Hill, but great tracks overall!

Thanks, Andy! It was between Lauryn and Jamelia for me! You are a superstar! Or as they call it where you live a “banger and mash”!

Probably the objectively right choice tbh! Also thanks for sharing the post ✨

Loved this soooo much!

Mary Katherine Gallagher is my absolute favorite SNL character ever!! (I got in a lot of trouble for my constant impressions in the early 2000s LMAO!) and just love Molly Shannon! So, you know the first thing I did when I woke up on my 50th birthday! Hahahaha

It was a complete toss up for me between Beach House (totally going to check out more from them! Right up my alley and in my music gap!) and Pretty Sick (also never heard of and right up my alley)!

Y’all missed my favorite! Superstar by Rainbow Kitten Surprise!

I’m not sure how we missed RKS! We definitely did a lot of searching. Molly Shannon is an international treasure.

Lavender Sound (Max Freedman)'s avatar

I don’t think i’ve ever listened to RKS and maybe that changes here!

Kristin DeMarr's avatar

Oh you need to!! This was maybe in my top 10 list last year https://youtu.be/_LLPhiPignc?is=pdGaYs6425Ut38s0

If it wasn’t in my top 10 it was definitely in very close running for top 10!

Holy cow, this was some serious excavating. Nicely done, both of you. Really enjoyed this. I enjoyed seeing how you approached it and your banter more than any of the tracks. But that Jamelia one was pretty catchy.

among the new finds it was probably my fave! Thanks for reading and sharing Taz ✨

Good show, gents! Had not heard any of the "Superstars" here, except, of course for the Russell/Bramlett one made popular by Carpenters. Max, you live in a musical world I'm guessing is from another planet....I never am familiar with your artist-mentions! But, I love that (and other things) about you, not gwina lie.....my ear is just not as pressed against the ground (or wall, or wherever ears are usually pressed) to be plugged into "those kids today"! So, mad Max props(😱) to ya for being prolly as hooked up to today's music as I reckon I was in the '70s (the decade, not the temperature)!

Steve, I loved Molly Shannon's Mary Catherine exploits on SNL, but have never seen the movie, but would love to! If we were neighbors, I'd love to come over, share a bowl of a bunch of things my doctor would frown upon, and have a guilty-pleasure giggle-off watching it! That whole comedy notion of SNL "skit-actors" and their inventing characters that they (sometimes) built during their stand-up routines, and/or had to audition for Lorne Michaels to get on-air, has always been a fascination for me....and, worthy of exploration, methinks....like, how and where the heck did Molly "dream up" Mary Catherine? Did you see any of Molly's guest-spots on "Will & Grace"? Predictably classic! Here's a reel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b04q67zDig

That’s exactly it Brad! Your relationship to music in the ‘70s is mine with the music of the 2010s and 2020s. It’s not quite Mars but it’s close!

Brad Kyle's avatar

That's really impressive, Max, as everything, musically, seems so spread out and harder to find these days...mainly thanks to the internet! The multitudes of hard-to-find "dark corners" in which music and new artists can hide is mind-numbing and 😱 to imagine! Keep it up!💪😁👍

Lavender Sound (Max Freedman)'s avatar

The quest is part of the fun for me!

Steve Goldberg's avatar

Thanks, Brad! Yeah, Max is definitely more clued into more recent music than you and I, but I try to keep up as best I can! :-) regarding Molly Shannon, she was always one of my favorite SNL cast members. But I’ve enjoyed her work over the past decade even more. She’s an amazing dramatic actress as well. And she was fantastic in one of my favorite recent sitcoms, The Other Two.

Brad Kyle's avatar

Looks like I have to catch up to "The Other Two." Haven't seen it.

Lavender Sound (Max Freedman)'s avatar

Yes you do!!! Wildly underrated show. Molly Shannon is excellent in it.

Steve Goldberg's avatar

I think it's on HBO. Here's a fun trailer for season 2. I think it ran for 3 seasons.

Brad Kyle's avatar

Thanks for that trailer....I'll check it out!

What I get out of all of this is that Max didn't know the Carpenters' "Superstar"....

Steve Goldberg's avatar

Kids these days….amirite?😊

Lavender Sound (Max Freedman)'s avatar

...how could you tell 😅

Emm as in Music's avatar

In another time, i might have gone with Beach House, but they collabed with Ye after Ye started doing more proble, atic things and it kind of broke my heart. So, i chose otherwise. I still prefer the Bonnie/Delaney or Carpenters' Superstar to these ones, but Pretty Sick was a new to me delight!

Steve Goldberg's avatar

And, yeah, I figured most people would vote for The Carpenters. I mean, I probably would as well. Which is why we excluded them from the vote.

Steve Goldberg's avatar

I didn’t know about this unfortunate collaboration either! Max and I spent a lot of our attention on the Isley Brothers, who were originally part of the final five, until we realized they collaborated with R. Kelly way after it was known about what he’d done. That’s how Pretty Sick made the cut.

Emm as in Music's avatar

Yeah. A lot of really gross musical history.

Lavender Sound (Max Freedman)'s avatar

I...did not know this about Beach House and Ye. Huh???? I actually didn't know they even worked together. Oof. And yeah the Pretty Sick one is solid

The greatest one of all.

Steve Goldberg's avatar

David, I'm so glad you linked to this. It almost made the cut! We had a list of 10 songs that we narrowed to 5, and the longer list included it.

David Perlmutter's avatar

Good- it only missed it by that much…
